FACULTY OF ENGLISH LANGUAGE, LITERATURE & APPLIED LINGUISTICS

The Department of English, NIML, was established in 1974 – primarily to cater to the demands of diplomats posted in Islamabad. Within the span of 20 years the rapidly growing number of students and programs led to the bifurcation of this department - in 1994. In this way the Department of English (GS) and the Department of English (FC) were created. This bifurcation was the beginning of the establishment of the Faculty of English LL&AL, which forms an umbrella for the two departments. This meant that the regular language classes were assigned to the Department of English (FC) and the degree programs – principally the MA in English, Literature & Linguistics and the MAELT along with special language programs came under the jurisdiction of the Department of English (GS).

The Department of English (FC) caters to the increasing demand for ESL at various levels and is currently conducting BS English – Hons – and BSML programs. ESL is taught at Foundation, Certificate and Diploma levels side by side with special programs for user agencies. Special English language programs are designed for user agencies – like the National Assembly Employees; the Saudi Defence Forces; the Fulbright office in Pakistan; and the Chinese People’s Liberation Army, to name a few. These programs are conducted after a thorough needs analysis and survey of the user agency’s requirement.

The Department of English (GS) is presently conducting a Masters in English Language Teaching program; Masters in English Linguistics and Literature; Advanced Diploma in English (Language); Advanced Diploma in English (Literature & Linguistics); PGD in TEFL; as well as language courses in the evening and special courses for user agencies. All programs are being conducted according to the latest methodology in English Language Teaching and student participation is keenly encouraged.

Great care has been taken in designing the syllabus of MA English in order to maintain a balance between linguistics and literature by introducing students to subjects like phonetics and phonology; general and historical linguistics; grammar/syntax and semantics and stylistics along with the study of different genres of literature. This is the flagship program of the Faculty of English Language, Literature and Applied Linguistics. The number of applicants for MA English has continued to increase with the demand for more seats and the department continues to absorb this demand.

Teachers and students of the department are encouraged to use the latest methodology. AVAs, language labs and computer labs are used in class, on a regular basis, to supplement and improve the process of language teaching. Micro teaching or peer teaching is a compulsory component of the TEFL/TESL papers and simulates practical teaching in the classroom. Group activities, form an essential part of ELT, and are encouraged to ensure positive contribution to the teaching/learning process.

The success of the TEFL/TESL component led to the introduction of various teacher training oriented programs like Advanced Diploma in Linguistics & Literature; Advanced Diploma in English Language and PGD TEFL. The department also designs & conducts special Language Teacher Training programs for user agencies like Fauji Foundation Schools & Colleges; NAVTEC and the Academy for Educational Development. Aside from the regular programs, the Dept of English continues to grow as a language department.

The Faculty of English Language, Literature and Applied Linguistics, continues to serve the cause of learning and research. The Faculty is chaired by the Dean – Dr Rubina Kamran – and headed by Dr Shaheena Ayub Bhatti (English – GS) and Dr Nighat Ahmed (English – FC).  The list of faculty is comprehensive with a number of PhDs. The majority hold two Masters - Masters in English Language Teaching and Masters in English Literature and Linguistics/Masters in English Literature.
